Storyline
Born and raised on the Prairies, William Kurelek (1927-1977) was the oldest of seven children born to poor Ukrainian-Canadian settlers. He was expected to help run the family farm, but his lack of mechanical aptitude made him unsuitable for the tasks at hand. His prominent desire to become a painter led his uneducated, immigrant father to persistently humiliate and criticise him. William revered and despised his father Dmytro - a love/hate relationship persisting throughout their lives. ...As a young boy, William intuited that his destiny was to become a famous Canadian artist.
