Anne
A newly widowed mother who is trying to maintain her relationship with her son suffering from substance abuse. This is not the first time her son has been addicted to substances, but now as the sole parent, her unconditional love and support must be the anchor for what's left of the family.
Gabe
Had previously suffered from cocaine addiction but after his father passed, he found himself enveloped in the substance again. He isolates himself from his mother because he's disappointed in himself for falling back into bad habits.
Oli
Oli is a curious but reserved little boy who has grown up disconnected from his Vietnamese roots and is just learning to navigate the world. He’s hesitant around his grandmother, struggling to understand her through language, generational, and cultural barriers, but gradually opens up and learns to embrace her as family. His journey is one of discovery as he learns how love can be through small moments of connection.
Grandma
Grandma is a warm, frail woman whose love for her family is expressed through her kind, caring, and nurturing ways. Her acts of love through her crocheting serve as a bridge in attempts to cross the language barrier she faces with her grandson, whom she seeks to connect with despite his reluctance. During her stay, she brings newfound joy, humour, and cultural connection to the family. (Strongly Preferred to speak Vietnamese)
Mom
Mom is a warm, practical woman, caught between her Vietnamese roots and the life she’s built in the West. She’s deeply caring and nurturing, but also feels the strain of balancing cultural expectations with the realities of raising her son in a foreign country. Her relationship with Grandma is loving, though sometimes complicated by their generational and cultural gaps. (Strongly preferred to speak Vietnamese)
Dad
Dad is a quiet, steady presence in the family, reserved but supportive. He has a pragmatic view of life and maintains a sense of reverence towards his Vietnamese heritage, offers a quiet, guiding strength to his family, and holds deep love and respect for Grandma. (Strongly preferred to speak Vietnamese)
Lance
Lance is a early 20s male, who has a lanky appearance, tall but very cowardly in presence. He works at the company Perreni as a programmer. Lance is a follower of his boss and does his every wish regardless of if he agrees with it or not.
Markus
Markus is in his mid 30s, male, and the manager of Perreni. He is a bulky and stern looking man. Markus doesn’t know much about technology but sure knows how to whip some workers into shape.
Dr. Sharifi
Eccentric family doctor who is contemplative and slow moving. Understated comedy role. Must speak Farsi (as first language) and English.
Nilli
Overbearing mother who values preserving family image over all else. Comedy role. Must speak Farsi (as first language) and English.
Joel
Joel, the quick-witted protagonist, recounts a complicated past relationship during a session with his new therapist. He is a young man, but no longer a child. He’s lived long enough to carry dark circles under his eyes, but not enough to shed a flimsy confidence and an instinct to keep everyone at an arm’s length.
Ivy
Ivy, a friend from Joel’s high school years, is someone he always loved. She is gentle and kind, with a calm disposition that naturally draws people to her. Yet, behind her bright exterior lies a hidden darkness, as she quietly contends with struggles Joel never sees.
Therapist
The therapist, a calm and composed woman with a wealth of experience, approaches her work with quiet precision. Despite the disarray of her office, her sharp intellect shines as she skillfully navigates Joel’s guarded demeanor, patiently awaiting the moment his defenses begin to crack.
Willson
After the death of his wife, Audrey, Wilson became closed off to the people in his neighborhood. He lives his life as if Audrey was still alive – he cooks nothing, prepares two coffees every morning, and keeps all her old things on her nightstand. Heartbroken, Wilson is grumpy, lonely, and isolated from the community he once participated in.
Ella
Ella is a passionate young “Youth Scout” in a community grieving the death of one of its most inspiring contributors, Audrey Mitchel. She has taken on a lead role in a troop of young girls, selling cookies to anyone she can – or, trying to. She is persistent, poised, passionate, and playful, which changes the life of a certain individual in her community.
Carol
Ella’s Mom. Carol is kind and compassionate, wanting the best for people in her small community. She puts in effort to include everyone, despite their struggles.
Olivia
Ella’s “right-hand-girl”. Amelia is just as passionate about their troop – making the “Youth Scouts” the utmost priority in her life. She is the bearer of the red wagon.
Amelia
As the documenter of the troop’s activities, Amelia is also very passionate about her work as a “Youth Scout”. She carries a polaroid camera to document every challenge, every sale, and every moment.
Man
A neighborhood dad. He wants to support the local “Youth Scouts”, but also he wants to support Wilson
Woman
A neighborhood mom. She sees the efforts of Wilson and the girls, and can’t help but to support it
