Mallory was once a bright, artistic free spirit and a social butterfly, but after getting sexually assaulted by a classmate at a party, she has completely shut down. She suppresses her true self and interests in an effort to go unnoticed, has stopped trying in school, and struggles to talk about what happened. This has created distance between her and the people around her, particularly her best friend, Danielle. Mallory has developed silent resentment towards the people in her life as a result of this distance, feeling like everybody is constantly walking on eggshells around her and won’t speak to her like a normal person anymore. They’ve always understood each other well, but since Mallory was sexually assaulted at a party, things have changed. Mallory has been acting differently, and Danielle feels like she can’t connect with her anymore. She’s tried to help and has encouraged Mallory to talk to someone or get help, but this seems to push Mallory away even more. When Danielle gives her space, Mallory seems upset about this, too. Danielle is worried for Mallory wants to communicate her concerns, but she doesn’t know how and becomes avoidant, causing distance between them.

Ben is Mallory’s father. He is a working-class man who focuses on simple things like being happy and getting through each day. As a single parent, he does his best to support Mallory. He takes care of her basic needs but has a hard time connecting with her emotionally. He knows something bad happened to her at a party recently, but Mallory refuses to share details and shuts him out. Ben tries to give her the space she says she needs, but he quietly wonders if that is really helping. Still, he struggles to bring up his concerns, afraid of making things worse between them.

Ms. Woods is the school guidance counsellor. She cares a lot about her students' well-being and often encourages those who are struggling in class to ask for help or come talk to her, especially when they seem to be avoiding it. She believes these students usually need the most support. Mallory is one of those students. Ms. Woods has been keeping an eye on her since hearing that her attendance and grades have been dropping. She is trying to encourage Mallory to reach out and open up about what’s going on.

Mr. Sloan is one of Mallory’s teachers. He means well and is genuinely concerned about her, as she has been missing many classes and her grades have dropped sharply. He cares about helping her get back on track and has tried to express his concern about her and her future if things don’t change. He hopes that something he says might reach her and make a difference.

Fitz is a jaded person, having been kicked out of the police force for being a loose cannon and a semi-functional alcoholic. He is very calculating, believing himself to be the smartest person in the room. Fitz feels superior to Alice, mainly because he views her as “just a woman” who has no idea how to do her job. From his point of view, it’s everyone else’s fault that he’s no longer a police officer, and he’ll show them all by solving this case. Fitz may have scenes where he will be smoking. Alice is confident in her abilities, not intimidated by Fitz’s hostility. She knows what she wants and is not afraid to fight for it. Beau was Alice’s mentor and friend at a time when female detectives were a rarity on any police force. She is incredibly driven to find his killer.

Lucy is the ex-wife of Fitz and the widow of Beau. She was not happy about Fitz’ drinking but only left him when Beau revealed that he had been cheating on her. Beau became the light of her life, and she is still in shock, grieving his death, when Fitz visits her. Despite her hostility towards Fitz, she wants to do whatever she can to help find Beau’s killer.

James is the bus boy at a local bar that Fitz used to frequent. James was the resident piano player until he was exposed to what was considered an indecent act. He and Fitz were carrying on an affair which James’s thought was love but Fitz viewed as just sex. It was brief – Beau caught them, and Fitz distanced himself from James. The ability to play the piano is an asset for this role but not essential.
