Storyline
Logline: After falling flat on his face in the big city, Paul tries to slip back into life on the rez as if nothing happened, but his eccentric family's not having any of it.

On Grouse Lake First Nation, way up in Northern Manitoba, you’ll find a community that lives by its own set of rules. The only way to get up to this isolated fly-in community is on a bumpy nine-passenger bush plane that has a dashboard like an 89’ Corolla and every time it bounces in the air you think you’re going to crash. It’s up on Grouse Lake where you’ll find Paul and Dean, two bickering cousins who have been running the family lodge for years, and their assorted family and friends - amongst whom the worst insult you can hurl at someone is the accusation of "Acting Good." - a common rez expression that people wield against each other whenever they’re perceived to be full of themselves. It’s basically the process of making sure nobody ever gets too big for their britches (and humility is one of the seven sacred teachings after all.) Deep down, "Acting Good" is a celebration of life on the rez. Despite the feelings of isolation, life up north comes with freedom and natural beauty that you don’t often find anywhere else - and lots of good-natured but occasionally barbed ribbing amongst family… and friends so close they might as well be family.
Roles
Role typeRoleGender & Age range
LeadJOFemale 35 - 40 Years old
Description
Jo is a reformed bad girl (former leader of a “bike gang” that shared one bicycle) turned band councillor. Trying to shake her reputation as a former bully on the rez, Jo is still a victim of her own temper. Naughty by nature, Jo is an intimidating force around the rez which comes in handy as a band councillor. She’s more boss bitch than bitch boss. Hardworking and determined, Jo is often the first one to work and the last one to leave. She works hard but loves even harder, often falling for the most handsome, rugged men on the rez… until she decides they can’t live up to her standards. This cycle has led Jo to have three children with three different fathers. Jo is the type of mom who’s overly honest and will share every detail of her life with her teen daughter, Chickadee, to make her point. Annoyed with the constant love and “can do no wrong” attitude her mother gives to her younger brother, Paul, Jo secretly wishes she had her mother’s approval.

LeadDEANMale 28 - 35 Years old
Description
Early 30"s
Laidback & easy to please, Dean is exactly who you think of when you think about someone who lives in a beat-up, overly cluttered, shack. When he’s not there, he can be found in the broken-down school bus in his front yard, hotboxing the bus. And yes, he will out smoke anyone on the rez. Work is annoying for Dean and he avoids it whenever possible, often times citing that he’s his own boss which helps his “business”. Competitive by nature, it’s super important to Dean that he has the biggest movie collection on his one USB stick and the go to “movie man” on the rez. Affable, unreliable, and lazy, Dean is always letting people down and somehow getting away with it. More rez smart than book smart with a big heart, the real beauty of Dean is in his simplicity.

LeadROSEFemale 28 - 33 Years old
Description
A proud Cree woman in a community of mostly Ojibway, Rose can be the sweetest girl you’ll meet until she feels disrespected. Then, she’ll let you know who’s boss. As the receptionist in the band office, Rose is the warm face and welcoming voice that greets people every time someone comes in. As a hopeless romantic and a rom-com superfan, Rose has dated and broken up with Paul many times. Superficial, in love with the fantasy of being in love, and addicted to the drama, Rose just wants what’s best for herself. An ambitious, self-promoter, Rose puts a lot of thought and care into growing her Indigenous make-up focused YouTube channel. She likes the attention that comes along with it and secretly hopes she’ll get noticed one day. Despite being strong willed, Rose is afraid of being alone, which is why she always has a plan B in waiting after she breaks up with Paul. While only dramatic when it comes to her love life, Rose’s patience and calm demeanour make her a perfect sounding board for Jo. In fact, Rose is the sister Jo always wanted.

LeadCHICKADEEFemale 14 - 20 Years old
Description
Jo’s tell-it-as-it-is problem child who deals with boredom on the rez by causing mischief and mayhem wherever she goes. Chickadee answers to nobody... except her Mom... sometimes. She’s so strong and self-sufficient that people often forget she’s still a teen. You only have to see her drive by smoking a cigarette to think that she’s more of a cool uncle than a teen girl. In reality, Chickadee is weaker than she would ever let on, her tough exterior is masking her own emotions, fears, and insecurities which are actually quite normal for someone her age. Arguably the coolest motherfucker on the rez with a high bullshit meter, Chickadee is a roaming troublemaker who has already outsmarted anything that can be offered in school. Often acting as her Mom’s pillar of support, Chickadee can level Jo out and walk her back in a way only a few people can. When that doesn’t work, she’ll just go and get spoiled by her grandmother.
