We are ideally looking for immigrant actors for the roles that indicate accents. In some cases we are looking for a specific country or origin and accent, others are flexible.

FOREIGN TONGUE is a romantic comedy infused with magical realism, embracing the absurdity of everyday life while offering a grounded, honest portrayal of the world we all pretend to understand.
The year is 2011.
Kathy is a talented singer, an overly enthusiastic amateur sommelier (secretly convinced she’s two sips away from opening her own winery) a highly successful recruiter/headhunter, and a divorced, single woman. After her divorce, she moves from Vancouver to Toronto, where her professional life thrives with the help of her childhood fried Sarah, but her love and social life spirals into the abyss of loneliness. Kathy develops a “shortcut” for men—a cynical, emotionally-checked-out approach that gives her dating life the feel and sparkle of a nihilistic sitcom on its final season.
With a few (too many) glasses of bad Pinot in her, while trying to escape a speed-dating event —both metaphorically and physically— Kathy falls, hits her head and faints. This leads to a stroke and she develops the extremely rare "foreign tongue syndrome." Yes, it’s a real thing— where you suddenly wake up speaking with a strong foreign accent that makes no sense.
Kathy wakes up from the coma and things go downhill faster than a rogue shopping cart in a parking lot. Her once-thriving business falls apart because, apparently, top clients are “very particular about their headhunters not sounding like they’re auditioning for an international espionage film”. Now, Kathy’s already lonely personal life is like a deserted island, minus the palm trees. The few people left in her orbit either don’t care or are too busy to bother decoding why she suddenly sounds like she is part of a Balkan mob. Kathy isn’t just single and lonely— she has an existential crisis of the strangest kind.
The two people sympathetic to Kathy’s situation are her Doctor and Visnja, the hospital janitor who overhears Kathy’s diagnosis. The doctor recommends English as a Second Language (ESL) classes for accent reduction and Visnja, realizing how desperate Kathy is, suggests she joins the class she herself has been attending since coming to Canada as a refuge from Bosnia years ago. Through Visnja, Kathy meets a diverse and friendly group of newcomers from various parts of the world. These people are united by the common problem - they all have a significant language barrier to overcome in order to succeed in their new country. Ironically, Kathy has the same problem—born and bred Canadian— she finds herself in the same boat, only she’s rowing backwards. In so many ways, she is the foreigner within.
But what Kathy finally finds is a community where her cynical guard is unnecessary and the honest, basic humanity overshadows all the issues. She also meets David who she instantly has a special connection with. Sick of explaining what really happened to her and how she got the accent, Kathy decides to pretend she is a Bosnian immigrant, telling David and others she is from Sarajevo.
Soon enough, Kathy—who knows less about Bosnia than she does about quantum physics— finds herself fully committed to the lie. And guess what? It works. She gains new friends, a sense of purpose, love, and even professional success in her “new” persona.
