And yet, she feels a certain empathy for Jake when she meets him for the first time, surprised that her perpetrator is a blind teenager. Moss hopes he can choose to give up his phreaker ways.

female, 40’s, white. Eva is a perpetually tired single mom. She’s devoted to Brad and Jake but has trouble showing it. She works long hours as a nurse yet can still never quite catch up on their bills and debts. She loves her sons and wants to be involved in their lives, but between work and them being teenage boys she just doesn’t have the energy. Eva is suspicious of the new appliances, gift cards and tech gear that arrives in their home but can’t bring herself to investigate further music less put a stop to it, because Jake seems engaged and motivated for the first time. She is happy that he has finally found an outlet and friends and doesn’t want to believe it’s going to lead to anything bad. And when it does, she blames herself for failing to stop it.

male, 20-24 years old, white. Tall and bigger/strong build with a buzz cut and an attitude. He and his friend Pete have a two-man band that plays out of his bedroom. He blames Jake and his blindness for their father leaving and for making the family’s life harder and holds it over Jake’s head any chance he gets. Brad begins to come around when Jake’s phreaking gets them gift cards to spend and new gear for their house and he begins to see how capable and cool his brother can be.

female, 30’s, black, plus-sized. Lavonia runs a phone sex operation. She answers the line, encourages the customer to share their credit cards and connects them to one of her lovely ladies. She has her routine down so well she doesn’t even have to stop reading the new “Twilight” book as she talks. DAY PLAYER

50’s, white. A VP at Verizon who’s a bit of a prick without really trying to be. The consummate bureaucrat and ladder-climber who just wants the job done on time and on budget. A self-important executive who refuses to take Dave seriously because he has no imagination. He condescendingly laughs off Dave’s warning about Jake and then panics just a few months later when it has cost the company a significant amount. DAY PLAYER

18 years old, black, a gamer who smokes weed while playing video games non-stop. He’s a regular on the party lines. A bit foul-mouthed with a big energy, has a running feud with The Countess. DAY PLAYER

40’s. White. Bigger build. An Overweight, a washed-up former athlete who let himself go. A sports loving, loud-mouthed member of the party line who lives alone with his dog. Slim Fatts is his alter ego that makes him more socially confident when he’s on the phone. DAY PLAYER

45-55 years old, white. A bored, sexually frustrated housewife who spends her days in a bathrobe, chatting on party lines and scanning Avon catalogs. She’s a fan of the private rooms and sexy flirtations with other members of the regular group on the party lines. DAY PLAYER

20s. Asian or white. Could find a similar guy at a startup or in tech, he’s a coder that works from home and spends most of his time on the party lines. Wizard educates Jake on the advantages of private lines: free phone sex. DAY PLAYER
