Storyline
Convalescence is a dystopian thriller that follows Mara, a young queer woman struggling with addiction, as she is forced into a rehab centre that employs an unconventional treatment method that strips her of autonomy. The film raises questions about what type of support and freedom mentally ill people need in order to heal and if we currently receive it from the systems we have in place. Convalescence is funded by Canada Council.

Hannah comes from a loving household who shunned her due to her addiction and diagnosis of Bipolar. She’s determined to live life on her own terms and has absolutely no regard for authority. Always loud in public even when it might be socially inappropriate, Hannah doesn’t feel embarrassed when she receives judgement in return. She’d get in a fist fight to protect a friend, and she’d leave victoriously with a smile on her face. In a society that has always told her to be someone she’s not, Hannah counters her shame with witty sarcasm and unapologetic openness. She dreams of marrying a loving wife and moving somewhere deep in nature where she can make pottery and live in a disarray of their own making. PLEASE NOTE: potential of implied nudity, viewed topless from the back during a love scene. Open to discussion depending on comfort of performer. There will be an intimacy coordinator.
