We can accept union and non-union actors through our student agreement with ACTRA. This is a non-paying student film and no permit is required. Actors will receive a copy of the finished film for their demo reel.
Storyline
Is It? is a short drama film about Joey, a young, flamboyant queer man, who upon visiting a sexual health clinic for his first STI screening after an unprotected sexual encounter, discovers an unsettling truth: his sexual encounter was non-consensual. Although initially, he only thought of his experience as being merely “tricked,” he struggles with the realisation that he is a victim of stealthing: the nonconsensual removal of a condom. Joey then spirals into denial. As he attempts to reconnect with his best friend and roommate Gerrie, whom he has isolated himself from for weeks due to depressive episodes after the event before he knew he was assaulted, he puts on a facade of control through means of deluding himself that everything that happened is consensual. Throughout the story, Joey struggles to reclaim his sense of bodily autonomy while his denial erodes his friendship, his self-respect, and his sense of identity.

Description Joey is a confident, feminine queer man who expresses his identity through bold makeup and fashion. However, these only mask a growing sense of confusion after a sexual encounter that may not have been consensual. As a classic people pleaser, he always puts others’ feelings first before his own to avoid confrontation. He does not want to concern anyone around him, including his best friend, Gerrie, who he withdraws from to hide his confusion and the struggle he’s been having. N.B. - Due to the nature of this film, we are working with an Intimacy Coordinator to ensure that everyone feels safe and comfortable on set. There are 2 intimate scenes - 1. between Joey and The Tattooed Guy (whom he had the non-consensual encounter with) and 2. Joey and Hide_n_Kiss (whom he attempts to hook up with after his realization). Both of these encounters allude to intercourse, and include the actors being shirtless on screen to portray this act. | ||

Description Gerrie is a very loyal and deeply caring best friend to Joey, although she may be blunt with her honesty. She’s perceptive and knows Joey very well. She’s the first person to notice that something’s off with Joey, even though Joey brushes her concerns off constantly. Gerrie constantly acts as an anchor to Joey even if he won’t open up, but no matter what, she will always be there for Joey. | ||

He is mainly characterised by being a chaser, i.e., a “straight” man who pursues feminine men and transgender women in a fetishising way. His appearance is deliberately unkempt and low effort with untidy clothes and messy hair. Joey’s attraction to him is low, which shows his need for validation in pursuit of regaining his bodily autonomy.N.B. - Due to the nature of this film, we are working with an Intimacy Coordinator to ensure that everyone feels safe and comfortable on set.
