Storyline
When Grandma comes to stay with them for the holidays, young Oli faces an insurmountable challenge: the two do not share a common language. Having hardly spent any time with her growing up, Oli doesn’t know what to make of this newest (oldest) member of the Pham family household. Grandma, ever-astute as always, immediately picks up on the boy’s hyperfixation with dinosaurs; she crochets him a tiny Stegosaurus to break the ice. Oli, startled by her generosity and warmth, takes the gift but runs off – only to Grandma’s dismay. Curious Oli sneaks into her room later that night, digging into her crafts basket and making off with his find. He works through the night on this latest project and proudly presents it to Grandma the next morning: a mangled, misshapen teddy bear. Fighting through tears of laughter Grandma teaches young Oli how to crochet. The two spend day after day working together on their newly-shared hobby – all until one afternoon when Grandma
disappears. Her clothes cleared from his room; her crafts basket gone; no matter where Oli looks, his grandmother is nowhere to be found. Oli questions his parents; the two struggle to break the news to him - Grandma’s time with them has come to an end. Just as Oli is about to burst into tears, the doorbell rings. He sprints off to answer it; Grandma stands on the other side of the door, farewell treats in hand for dear Oli. He tackles her with a giant hug, and utters the one Vietnamese word he picked up over their time together: “Dinosaur.”
