Storyline
One day after his historic space flight, YURI GAGARIN is interrogated by Soviet official ANNA LINEV about his experiences in space. NIKOLAI BRASHKOV operates a tape recorder to document the debriefing, while spaceship designer SERGEI KOROLEV sits in. Over the course of the interrogation, Yuri comes to grips with the harsh realities of being a cosmonaut and a Soviet pawn on the world stage.
Roles
Role type | Role | Gender & Age range |
Lead | YURI GAGARIN | Male 25 - 30 Years old |
Description Soviet Cosmonaut. First Man in space. Yuri is aware of the Soviet eyes on him and the authoritarian control around him. However, he is young, naive, and has a newfound boldness and confidence following this historical flight, leaving him with a soft sense of invincibility, only to have that slowly taken out of him by the end of the film.
Role type | Role | Gender & Age range |
Principal | ANNA LINEV | Female 30 - 50 Years old |
Description Anna Linev, the Soviet interrogator is a perfectionist and hypercritical of herself and others. She looks at those around her as pawns to get the job done but takes the all the credit for herself. What makes her so terrifying is that she has the capacity to empathize with people, to see what makes them human and instead, uses that to turn the knife on them.
Role type | Role | Gender & Age range |
Principal | NIKOLAI BRASHKOV | Male 20 - 30 Years old |
Description The tape operator, Brashkov, is idealistic, anxious, and green. He is merely trying to survive the interrogation and operate the tape machine, while secretly admiring Yuri Gagarin and some of his anti-Soviet tendencies and heroics.
Role type | Role | Gender & Age range |
Principal | SERGEI KOROLEV | Male 40 - 65 Years old |
Description The designer of the space program and the spaceship, Korolev is someone who plays both the political game and the space race game, allowing his cosmonauts to be used by the state for whatever means so long as he can still design the program and stay on good terms with the government. Even though he feels some empathy and sadness when he betrays Gagarin, he ignores that because it is what’s best for the whole space program and himself. |
