Because his family expects him to appear perfect and “over” his grief, Charlie feels pressured to fake emotional progress he hasn’t actually reached.

Sam is scrawnier but physically fit, with a youthful appearance and a strong focus on style, shown through bright, patterned clothing and carefully styled hair. He uses humor and a carefree attitude to cope with the seriousness of his home life and to rebel against his family. His understanding of grief is shaped by his father, who taught him to repress emotions and view emotional expression negatively.
