Sarah
Sarah is a deeply religious and traditional woman who values control and adherence to the status quo. Outgoing and social, she takes pride in the image of a perfect family and becomes uncomfortable when things deviate from her expectations. Stubborn, dramatic, and emotional, Sarah struggles to reconcile her faith with her love for Riley, allowing her religious values to cloud her judgment. When Riley comes out, Sarah reacts with denial and rejection, unable to accept a reality that challenges her beliefs. Despite her strict and controlling nature, she is not without compassion. Her love for her daughter ultimately pushes her toward reluctant growth, forcing her to confront her biases and try—however imperfectly—to understand.
Dimitri
Sarcastic and teasing, Dimitri often pokes fun at Riley but doesn’t seem malicious. He is confident, likely the golden child of the family. Though his humor can be biting, he doesn’t seem to hold strong opinions on his sister’s sexuality but he’s protective of her (deep down).
Mark
Mark is your typical silly dad, who likes to make jokes and teases his kids. He has always been supportive towards his kids, mainly only dealing with sports decisions, as he has never been in a deep conflict with his kids. While not overtly supportive of Riley’s sexuality, he isn’t as resistant as Sarah. He struggles to navigate the tension between his wife’s beliefs and his love for his daughter. He loves his kids not matter what but is disappointed thinking he did something wrong when as a parent for this to happen. He wants his kids to grow up and have a family like him, and he feels that can’t happen with Riley choices.
Reid
Reid is a polite and academically focused young man. He is used as a potential love interest for Riley, despite having no actual romantic interest in her. His presence is mostly for comedic and awkward moments, he tends to go along with things to avoid conflict, as Sarah tries to play matchmaker.
Bree
Bree gives off a warm, confident, and loving vibe. She is unafraid to express affection for Riley, even in front of others. She comes from a more accepting background, which contrasts with Riley’s struggle. Bree represents a supportive and healthy love, offering Riley a sense of security amidst her turmoil. Bree is a bit of a sporty person studying kinesiology at school and grew up playing sports, she loves going out and being social, as she is kind and not afraid to be herself.
Noah
Innocent, silly, and sweet, naïve, and seeks attention. Noah doesn’t fully understand the weight of the family conflict but shows unconditional love for his sibling. He is a younger sibling and nags and is a bit of a tattletale.
Alice
Alice is an old college friend of Sarah’s and the mother of Reid and Bree. Her presence is warm and welcome, although friends with Sarah, she evolved with a very different perspective of life. Being a signal mom, her kids are all she has, and her love for them isn’t conditional. she is loveable, witty and supportive towards daughter's decision to be gay. Although growing up in a religious household as well, she understands that people are different and is open to the idea of people being whoever they want to be.
Jerry
Jerry is a well-meaning but perpetually unlucky police officer whose life is in free fall. Recently divorced (but still clinging to hope), he’s desperate to prove he’s a responsible father and redeem himself in his ex-wife’s eyes. Unfortunately, he’s also anxious, overly self-conscious, and prone to spiralling when things go wrong, which they always do. He’s the type of guy who wants to be taken seriously but somehow always looks like he’s about to get caught doing something embarrassing. He overthinks everything, constantly second-guesses himself, and tries to avoid confrontation, except when his pride takes over, making everything worse. At his core, Jerry just wants to be seen as competent and put-together, even though he’s neither.
Tate
Tate is practical, sharp-witted, and always in control, or at least she wants people to think she is. She has spent years putting up with Jerry’s mishaps, and now that they’re separated, she’s ready to move on with someone stable. She’s organized, independent, and tired of cleaning up after other people’s messes. Despite her tough exterior, Tate isn’t heartless, she just has no patience for nonsense (which makes Jerry’s presence at her party even more unbearable). While she may still care about him deep down, she’s convinced that letting him back into her life would be a huge mistake.
Craig
Craig is a bitter, no-nonsense, perpetually unimpressed old man who never liked Jerry to begin with. A retired warehouse worker, Craig has zero patience for weakness, incompetence, or stupidity. He loves to criticize Jerry and takes every opportunity to remind him of his failures. Despite being tough and grumpy, Craig has a weirdly open-minded side, especially when it comes to his wife’s choices, which ends up being one of the most horrifying revelations of the night.
Richard
Richard is everything Jerry isn’t: put-together, successful, and painfully smug about it. He’s calm, collected, and annoyingly good at everything, but underneath his polished exterior he’s a little too eager to prove himself. Richard enjoys subtly putting Jerry down, acting polite on the surface but constantly making little digs. He presents himself as the perfect alternative to Jerry: stable, responsible, and everything Tate wants in a partner.
Isabella & Dorothy
Jerry’s daughters are sweet, innocent, and full of holiday excitement. They adore their dad and just want him to have fun with them. But thanks to Jerry’s unintentional LSD trip, they appear to him as full-grown, bearded men, turning every interaction into a nightmare.
MOMMY LU
BABY's stepmother, a woman struggling on her own with the responsibilities of raising a child she did not want. Emotionally detached, with deep-seated insecurities about aging, she is overly concerned with appearances and her own misfortunes, and frequently belittles BABY.
MR. SPIRA
A well-meaning, but somewhat awkward, guidance counsellor at BABY’s school. He shows concern for BABY's academic performance and well-being, however his attempts to address BABY’s struggles are limited by his lack of deeper understanding and connection with her.
TIMMY TUCKER
A tough and rebellious teen with a rough exterior and reputation as a bully, TIMMY shows moments of surprising kindness, particularly in defending BABY from her bullies.
MR. DRAPEAU
A health teacher who uses exaggerated, fear-based tactics to educate students about the risks of sexual activity. Blunt and somewhat ineffective in truly connecting with the students.
LISA
Please do not resubmit if you have already auditioned for this role. A heavily pregnant teenager with a rebellious and outspoken attitude, quick to express her frustration with the bureaucratic system that fails to support her. Despite her tough exterior, she reveals vulnerability through her struggles with dependency on her boyfriend and navigating the difficult path of young motherhood.
MRS. COLEMAN
A grieving mother/grandmother who shows compassion and empathy towards BABY, forming a quiet bond with her at the cemetery over their shared losses.
MAUREEN’S FATHER
Perceives himself as a kind, warm, modern christian, pizza-making dad with a strict and religious side who disapproves of BABY’s influence on his daughter, MAUREEN, and ultimately forbids them from spending time together.
MASON
A slightly sleazy, self-assured man who briefly dates MOMMY LU and has an unsettling, lecherous interaction with BABY.
