When his best friend Jimmy comes to visit at the hospital, sharing the happy details of his recent college search (with his dad no less) Lucas is compelled to hide his resentment. Il est reconnu pour avoir relevé les plus grands défis en termes d’opérations neurologiques, et il est très respecté pour les avancées qu’ont permis ses nombreuses recherches dans le domaine. Malgré son palmarès, Docteur Dufour reste un personnage assez froid et mystérieux. Son langage très scientifique le fait paraître comme un robot, un cyborg. Il semble incapable de ressentir des émotions lorsqu’il travaille, il ne laisse paraître aucune empathie envers ses patients. Si tout semble aussi impersonnel chez Docteur Dufour, c’est parce que sa vie personnelle ne fut pas autant marquée par la réussite que son parcours professionnel. Après une vie en couple pendant 25 ans, sa conjointe et lui-même se sont séparés après de multiples conflits. Docteur Dufour ne voit presque plus ses enfants. Docteur Dufour voit Charlotte depuis longtemps. Il éprouve une certaine empathie pour la jeune femme, qui lui rappelle sa propre fille. Par contre, il est fortement agacé par la mère de Charlotte, qu’il méprise pour ne laisser aucune liberté décisionnelle à sa fille. Il garde toujours son image de médecin rigide pour éviter que sa sympathie pour Charlotte vienne se mettre dans le chemin du succès de l’opération, et il fait un peu peur à Charlotte.

Alain a honte mais il s’adapte, change d’accent, de manière de s’habiller, de bouger. Mais l’anxiété qui sommeille en lui l’étouffe encore plus. Devenu adulte, Alain se définit toujours par sa maladie : il est l’homme malade. Quand une belle chose lui arrive, il se méfie. La colère qui le ronge depuis l’enfance est maintenant complètement refoulée, mais se décline en toute sortes de manifestations qui le rendent parfois attachant, mais souvent insupportable.
