Storyline
Love the Sinner is a hard-hitting dramatic two-hander with absurdist elements following the joint unraveling of high school sweethearts Lenna (a straight-A student and devout Catholic) and Elle (a shy stoner) when Elle comes out as trans. It’s an exploration of religious indoctrination, the nuance of teen love, and the abuse that unhealed trauma can catalyze.
The original concept was first developed in 2022 with the Playwrights’ Workshop Montreal’s Young Creators Unit, concluding in a reading with an audience. The project then received funding from Canada Arts Council for writing and dramaturgy followed by a workshop and invite-only stage reading.
The play sometimes tackles transphobia in an ugly way, and may be sensitive for trans/non-binary folks. The subject matter can be hard to address, and we are committed to making this a safe, professional environment.
Sensitive content includes: Transphobia, Homophobia, Religion, Sex, Suicide, Death, Abuse
***Please note that there is talk of sexuality, gender, and sex. There is kissing and potential simulated sexual acts (grinding and fondling as well as potential partial nudity (stripping down to bra/undershirt and underwear/shorts).. We will have an intimacy coordinator (Jen Viens).

Roles
Role type | Role | Gender & Age range |
Lead | Elle | 18 - 28 Years old |
Description Can play 17. A trans performer who can play trans-femme. Open ethnicity.Awkward, goofy, with a touch of anarchy and a weed habit, Elle has always had her head in the clouds. She has a big heart, but wishes that she had an even bigger mouth as she often struggles to speak her truth or know what she wants in life. When she meets Lenna at her new Catholic school, falls in love for the first time, and experiences the absolute bliss and terror that is high school infatuation, Elle finally realizes that she’s trans. What follows is a spiral of coming out to her very religious (and attempting to be supportive) girlfriend, figuring out what she wants in life, and needing to be brave enough to scream for it. Please note that at the start of the show, the story requires comfort with presenting more masculine (hair tied up, wearing a suit as a Catholic school uniform, minimal makeup), as the character comes out to herself as trans mid-show. |
