Storyline
It’s 1974 in a small, traditional village in Nova Scotia. Casey, a spunky and idealistic nine-year-old girl, wants the same rights and privileges as her older brother, namely a bike with gears, and she’s willing to do what it takes to buy one. She takes on a job as the village’s first female paper carrier. On her routes she discovers family secrets, and hangs out under the abandoned bridge with her feminist teenage cousin Monica and the new boy in town, Joey. Monica’s strict and traditional father, Chester, hates her defiant spirit; when Monica refuses to submit, Chester becomes violent, and murders her. Despite Casey’s accusations, the villagers blame Joey for Monica’s death. Casey is furious about the inequality of the world and refuses to give up on trying to convince the people of her uncle Chester’s guilt.
