TONE: The Jam Van is a character-driven ensemble dramedy with the restless energy of a road movie and the intimacy of a chamber piece. The humor comes from sharp banter, clashing personalities and the absurdity of being trapped in close quarters with people who know exactly how to push one another’s buttons. Beneath the comedy is genuine emotional weight, as old resentments, complicated relationships and long-held secrets rise to the surface. Performances should feel specific and emotionally grounded, with room for both heightened comic moments and quiet vulnerability. The film is messy, funny, tender and ultimately hopeful.

Storyline

Packed into a beat-up van, a dysfunctional pop punk band navigates long roads, longer silences, and messy relationships on their way to what could be their big break or their last show for good.

Description RAFE is the band’s drummer and resident devil’s advocate. Once quiet and soft-spoken, he kept his head down and focused on perfecting his craft. But after the band’s former bassist, Terry, made him the group’s scapegoat, Rafe became bitter, and slowly turned into the very kind of person he once despised. Now abrasive and defensive, Rafe is convinced the others are constantly judging him. His volatile, on-again, off-again relationship with Lizzy only heightens his insecurity and keeps him emotionally off balance. Trapped in the identity Terry bullied him into believing, Rafe is caught in a self-fulfilling prophecy. The others can call him out, but ultimately, he is the only one who can choose to change... Though new to traveling with the group, Chelsea is no stranger to their personalities or constant squabbling (they rehearse at her house). Soft-spoken, perceptive and quietly self-possessed, she is more comfortable observing from the sidelines than fighting to be heard. But when the band’s infighting threatens to spiral out of control, Chelsea is forced to step up, revealing a commanding voice she has kept hidden for years. Colleen and Davey have been each other’s childhood “what if” for as long as either can remember. Though they have never fully confronted the feelings between them, the possibility has always lingered beneath the surface.
