This film follows an emotionally heavy topic. Actors must be willing to be in scenes with shouting and arguments, replicating a parentally toxic household. Shortlisted minors will be briefed alongside their parent or legal guardian.

Other than the main family, which is mixed (an Asian and Caucasian household), all other roles are open to all ethnicities

Storyline

A young girl grows up in a privately toxic household, observing a conflict she’s too young to understand. As she matures and attempts to escape, she is pulled back by circumstance… Until, at twenty, she must decide whether leaving is worth abandoning a younger sister who will inherit the life she survived.

Lauren, an emotionally independent and quietly perceptive girl, learns to read rooms before she can read words. As a young girl, she only knows what she sees as normal; constant arguing and a base level of stress. As she grows, she begins to realise that perhaps this isn’t normal, and the weight of that information becomes an immense sense of guilt over her desire to leave her family behind. She is competent, in charge, and prepared to leave as a teenager, however bound by responsibility and that overwhelming guilt. Her internal turmoil is evident in the things she chooses not to say or do, and her progress is characterised by perseverance rather than revolt.

Description Asian or Caucasian Amelia and Dave live the suburban dream. High school sweethearts, their daughter should be the light of their lives. Both a victim and a perpetrator, Amelia only perpetuates the cycle of abuse by doing nothing and staying silent. Through routine and denial, Lauren’s mother preserves the impression of normalcy whilst remaining emotionally and functionally restricted. Although emotionally unavailable and not explicitly harsh, she does nothing to help her daughter in her hour of need.

Description Asian or Caucasian Dave is your classic suburban dad. Highschool-sweetheart wife, a beautiful daughter, and coach of the girls soccer team. A charismatic and socially acceptable person in public, when at home he becomes a verbally abusive, and eventually physically abusive man. His behaviour is unpredictable and changes the emotional climate of the house simply through his presence, and his words if provoked. On the outside, he’s steady and amiable, but on the inside, his erratic behaviour determines the rhythm of the house.

Her behaviour unsettles the protagonist, not because it is remarkable, but rather that it is stable and predictable in ways Lauren has never experienced nor thought possible.

Description Mike is a dependable, warm dad, taking up room without taking over. His leadership is conveyed by calm assurance rather than control, and his presence is calming rather than tense. He challenges the protagonist’s internalised notion of what a household, and a father, can be by modelling an adulthood where kindness and strength coexist.

Must be able to play soccer, and bring their own soccer cleats and shin guards.

She believes in leading by example, so you’ll always see her with her husband, Scott, showing Kaylee what it means to be in a healthy, loving relationship. Together, they love seeing their daughter excel at her sport and never want to miss a minute of it.

Plus, he gets to sit with his wife and watch soccer – it’s like a mini-date every week. His worst nightmare would be missing Kaylee play at soccer provincials, which he might be more excited about than his daughter’s birth.
