Storyline
Idle is a short film that explores the quiet, internal journey of a teenage boy learning to see his mother—and himself—differently. Set entirely within the confines of a car, the story follows 16-year-old Dan on the way to his soccer game, a routine usually handled by his father. But when his mother, who struggles with mental illness, insists on renewing her prescription en route, what begins as an inconvenience slowly unravels Dan’s buried shame and frustration. After a series of unexpected encounters, Dan is forced to confront not only how he views his mother, but how deeply that view has shaped his self-worth.
Roles
Role typeRoleGender & Age range
LeadDanMale 16 - 20 Years old
Description
Dan (16) – struggles with his own identity and place in the world and is deeply terrified he is like his Mother. In an ideal world he would look like his Father (which he doesn’t) and avoid any of his Mother’s traits. He copes with his intense inner emotional world by shutting the outside world off, using music as his way of drowning out the noise.
Role typeRoleGender & Age range
Non SpeakingPatientAll 18 - 60 Years old
Description
The Patient has a history of mental health issues and has been in and out of facilities. Currently they are in a stint as an inpatient. Whilst outside, they have seen the car parked, and confusedly think they recognise the person inside (Dan). They hit on the bumper before being escorted back to the facility.

It requires a tremendous performance as we see this moment clearly from inside the car. It's the shift for the main protagonist so carries a lot of weight.
Role typeRoleGender & Age range
Featured ExtraManMale 30 - 60 Years old
Description
The man confronts Sarah about parking in a disabled spot and goes on a rant, feeling justified in his anger. He persists until her son Dan gets out of the car and yells at him. The role will require improvisation. There are no scripted lines but I would like to get a natural feeling confrontation.
