Storyline

Miles Mccarthy has grown up in a dystopian world, where from birth citizens are categorized by their predecided deaths. Categories that do not reveal the precise time or cause but list simplified means of death. For Miles, he is forced to live with the knowledge that he bares the rare and burdensome Category 11: Freak Accident, diagnosis, leaving him with a hyper-fixation that death could always be knocking. But in this world, these fates are not always permanent, as with every death comes rebirth and a new opportunity: The Auction. A place where wealthy hopefuls can attend to possibly buy a different path to death.

The story here finds Miles in his darkest time, finally seeking out others for help in a support meeting for the deathly afraid. As the group share their stories, Miles begins to become agitated at the delusion he sits amongst. At the same time the memories of the last auction circle his mind. Miles is more lost than ever but it leads him to cathartic confession, further shunning those around him.

Description A working-class male in his mid-20s, who from childhood had a self-awareness that he was different, trying to mask his oddities. But he can’t escape his heightened sense of disdain related to the death categories. His parents told him about the categories at age 4, far too young to develop any sort of healthy mindset toward them. Further, he also carries the rare Category 11: Freak Accident category. The unjust system and the cards he was dealt at birth have led him to a physiological state motivated by ambiguous morals. Miles was never dealt the cards of prosperity but he refuses to believe he can’t escape from his own hell. Believing that it is better to do injustice than continue to stand idle in a society that has never cared for the destitute.

Description The host and astute auctioneer of the yearly death auctions. He is stoic, unemotional and professional moving through each category with ease. He understands that this is a system for the betterment of society and his role is of the utmost importance. He is quick in pace and able to execute the high stress and fast bidding with control. A most hated figure amongst some but a pivotal one in helping the elite to their new paths.

Description The Facilitator of the support meeting for “The Deathly Afraid”. A fake charm behind a manipulative agenda. Set to help desperate individuals accept their fate and dismiss the injustice that is The Auction. Together in part with a cult called “The Divine” he seeks out those who have lost their way to show them a new way of salvation; believing that those who accept will be heavily rewarded in the afterlife.

Description Todd Galloway had never felt much promise in his life. He spent most of his days waiting for death to take him at any moment; born with the very rare Category 11: Freak Accident death category. He had never met another who shared the same fate, feeling isolated and alone. The downward spiral led him to ultimately try to take his own life, only to end up paralyzed from the waist down, confined to a wheelchair. Now finding his place amongst a community that seeks to accept their fates for what they are, he hopes to one day help another who shares the rarest of deaths; with the realization that something larger is at play and that his death is in fact predetermined.

Description SOC: Chloe has grown up with a family that believes that the Auction is not an option and that you must accept your chosen fate. However, upon her cancer diagnosis, related to Chloe’s Category 2: Disease Category, Chloe can no longer follow these teachings. Finally attending her first Auction, she goes against her family's wishes hopeful to save herself, only to realize that this is indeed not an option for most.
