LeadDAVID (TEENAGER/YOUNG ADULT)Male 18 - 25 Years old
Description
(LEAD) This role involves playing the same character in two different periods: age 18 and age 25. Teenage David (age 18) has figured out a lot in life since being a kid at summer camp. He’s found his confidence, built a network of a few close friends who confide everything in each other and has even found a serious girlfriend in school who he loves very much. He’s found his passion in life in a very niche component of software engineering and is excited to leave the nest and experience the outside world as an adult. We are with him in that transitional time, the final summer before he goes abroad for school. His girlfriend (Amy) and he have decided they’re going to try long distance but deep down he knows that there’s a good chance the distance is too much to overcome. Amy asked David if he’d take a gap year to travel with her but David declined. Deep down, the reason he said no was in his mind he was worried he’d be looked at like a failure or less smart than the rest of his freshman class in college because he’d be 19 when everyone else was 18. Later on, David looks back on this moment and with hindsight and feels as though he made a mistake. Because the future is uncertain, he’s embraced carpe diem and is living this final summer before college as if it’s his last.

When we jump forward 7 years in time, David is now a young adult (age 25). He’s secured a great job working in his software development niche, moved into his first real apartment, and is living with his new long-term girlfriend, Mia. He’s in a great place in life and his parents are so proud. With that said, sometimes David feels as though his life has gotten boring. He feels like he falls into the same routine, working a 9-5, coming home to his girlfriend, eat, sleep, wake up, repeat. Sometimes he wonders if adult life is like this for everyone or if he made a mistake somewhere down the road and took the safer route instead of taking a risk for a more exciting existence. Ultimately, this is something he’s never going to truly know and that lack of closure makes it impossible for him to forget.

LeadDAVID (KID)Male 9 - 10 Years old
Description
(LEAD) 10 to 13 years old, all ethnicities boy. David is the protagonist of our film. He’s a shy kid who wants nothing more than to feel accepted by the people around him. At school, he’s not super popular, but also isn’t unpopular. He gets good grades and feels like he’s an acquaintance with everyone in his class.

He gets invited to all the birthday parties but isn’t that close to anyone in his class. He lacks close friendships in his life and hopes that summer camp will be his glow-up. Because of the immense expectations he has at camp for himself and all the pressure he’s allowed to build up, he’s incredibly nervous on the first day.

LeadAMY (David’s Teenage Girlfriend):Female 18 - 19 Years old
Description
(SUPPORTING) Amy and David have been in the same homeroom for their entire high school experience. Amy is an artist, she values the little things in life that most people pass by without a second thought. She still isn’t sure what she wants to do when she grows up and is going to take a gap year before college to figure herself out and travel. She tried to convince David to go with her, but he was too worried about falling behind in college to commit. Amy and David agreed to try long distance but deep down, Amy knows it’s not going to work out. It really upsets her because she believes that if the situation were slightly different, had they met later on in life, they could be soulmates and lifelong partners. Ultimately though, she respects David’s decision and his drive and ambition are two traits of his that she truly loves. Similar to David, she’s treating this final summer as high school ends as if it’s the last, cherishing every moment of it that she can.

LeadMIA (DAVID’S ADULT GIRLFRIEND)Female 23 - 28 Years old
Description
(SUPPORTING) Mia met David at college and it was an instant connection as they were the only two people in their program who wanted to go into the same software development niche. What began as regular late-night study sessions cramming during exam season, slowly became something more. They dated throughout their final year of college and it felt like fate when they were offered jobs at the exact same company back in Toronto, David’s hometown. They moved back to the city together and at this point, it just made sense to move in together. Mia is very focused and determined. She comes from a family that values work ethic, the prestige of a career, and income above most things and those values are definitely also instilled in Mia. She loves David, but since moving in together she isn’t sure if their long-term values necessarily align and that has cast doubt in her mind.
