His mother Marion is his only real support, as it has always been. Lucas is aware he may not survive, so his long-time desire to know about his father has developed a more poignant urgency. Marion has always shielded Lucas from the less than ideal circumstances around his birth. But eventually she relents and even names the man who completely abandoned them seventeen years ago. ...Unlike his peers, Lucas’ life is put on hold due to his sickness, causing envy for those around him with brighter futures. When his best friend Jimmy comes to visit at the hospital, sharing the happy details of his recent college search (with his dad no less) Lucas is compelled to hide his resentment. He tries his best to keep a level head for the sake of his mother, however the emotional and physical stresses of looming mortality are sometimes too much for Lucas to maintain the same composure as when he was healthy.
