Storyline
Up-and-coming artist Leo Veltmann has a fleeting, playful fight with his partner Evan in a darkened bedroom. His new exhibition, Hit Me opens its doors to a varied public. It is an artificially intelligent, masochistic tetherball that moans when hit. The exhibit attracts the special attention of Cecelia, who regularly visits, each time pushing the boundaries of her relationship to it. Leo reassures her that the piece is not sentient. Later on, Leo enters the control room of the exhibit, revealing Evan as the secret voice of the tetherball. There is no AI. Cecelia’s continued erratic attendance concerns Evan, and the distress she exhibits alienates him from his performance. Eventually, during a particularly adverse, emotionally volatile performance with Cecelia, Evan goes silent. He follows her, and brings her into the control room, which she soon leaves in embarrassment and anger after realizing the piece’s true nature. Leo and Evan feel their vision has fallen apart, and resolve to close down the exhibit, cutting the tetherball’s cord symbolically.
