Storyline

A young girl with a troubled past, JENNA FROST was headed down a destructive road until a passion from her childhood re-emerged. A love of art. Drawing. An outlet where she could channel her darkness. Exorcise her demons. The culmination of that refuge is her latest project, SAFEHAVEN, a graphic novel born from her nightmares. But after a car accident leaves her in coma, Jenna becomes trapped in her subconscious; a dystopian teen purgatory she believes to be real. Like Dorothy in Oz, Jenna begins a journey through a place she created. A place where paranoia runs rampant and demons lurk around every corner. The only person who can help her is JOHN RAYBURN, the school’s new crisis counselor. In reality, Rayburn is a cognitive therapist; an enigmatic man with an uncanny talent for tapping into the unconscious. Together, they must form an unusual dual-world partnership in a race to uncover the truth and bring Jenna back to life. .... SAFEHAVEN is two stories in one. The first takes place in the Coma World, a universe inside Jenna’s mind where nightmares become real. The second takes place in the Real World, where certain individuals want to make sure Jenna never regains consciousness. Most characters appear in these two worlds or timelines - the Real World and Coma World which is a terrifying creation of Jenna's subconscious. As such, characters have two different versions of themselves. Characters don't know that there is an alternative story playing out in Jenna's head. Everything is real to them, no matter the world.

Description The lead researcher and scientific genius behind the Meridian Institute, Dr. Mason Holister is a cutting edge neuropsychologist. A controversial figure in the medical community, he does not hesitate to employ unorthodox, radical treatments. Rayburn reaches out to Hollister in the hope that he may be able to bring Jenna out of her coma. Holister’s team has created a series of unapproved, experimental drugs that recover lost memories which support the treatment of serious mental disorders. Rayburn himself is a covert research subject of Holister’s, as he secretly struggles with psychosis and the crippling effects of depression since the death of his daughter Adi. ...It is not certain whether Holister really wants to help Jenna, or simply use her as a research subject? ...Or if the Meridian Institute is a legitimate research clinic, or posing as such?

Description With a background in military intelligence and covert operations, Wedge now serves as the head of security at the Meridian Institute. Clearly his duties, and capabilities, are well beyond those of an average security guard, and the Institute is not an average research hospital. With cold efficiency, Wedge employs the strict protocols the Institute demands, following Holister’s orders with surgical precision.

Description After hitting a brick wall in his own efforts to revive Jenna from her coma, Rayburn turns to the Meridian Institute. Dr. Riley Cadell is the lead clinician there and Holister’s right hand in the treatment/research of its patients. She tries to convince Jenna’s father Stuart that Rayburn has done all he can and that it’s now time for alternate treatment that she would lead. ...Dr. Cadell may be a passionate caregiver and mental health advocate, but like Holister, she may have hidden motives.

Description Jenna’s usual nurse Francis Zelk encounters this Desk Nurse (a co-worker he knows well), when he attends the ICU to kidnap Jenna. She tries to stop him - he attacks and leaves her locked in a closet until Rayburn finds her. Fearing Francis may immediately kill Jenna and Ellen if he sees police are on the way, Rayburn pleads with the Desk Nurse not to call security, just for five minutes.

Description Rayburn has a dangerous reaction to the experimental drugs Dr. Holister has covertly prescribed - fortunately he’s with Dr. Ellen Harwick when this happens and she’s able to call an ambulance and escort him to the ER. This ER doctor is Rayburn’s attending physician and does not know the true cause for Rayburn’s seizures and that he’s taking unapproved medications. Later when he heads up to the ICU looking for Ellen, the ER doctor encounters the Desk Nurse - but Ellen is nowhere to be found.

Description This capable, experienced paramedic is supervising Jenna’s transfer from the hospital ICU to that of the Meridian Institute. What starts as a routine transfer turns into a crises when Jenna goes into cardiac arrest.

Description This somewhat over-weight Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) is transporting a large cart of linens from one hospital ward to another. Between her, and the cart, there is no room to share an elevator with Rayburn - with polite but firm determination she ejects him from the elevator so she can continue with her duties.
