Storyline
Wilfred Buck centres on a Cree Elder, educator, author and ceremonial leader who’s been called the Indiana Jones of Indigenous star knowledge. Weaving together his sometimes-harrowing past and his present life with sky stories, we’ll explore colonization’s impact on Indigenous ways of knowing and what it means to respect “miswa” – all that is.

The dramatic re-enactments are without dialogue and will be set to narration adapted from Wilfred’s memoir. They are evocations of Wilfred’s younger life from the 1960s to the early 1980s.
Roles

PrincipalTWEEN WILFREDMale 12 - 14 Years old
Description
INDIGENOUS (Cree, open to other Indigenous backgrounds) -

Wilfred has had to grow up quick in hard circumstances so he’s used to taking care of himself. He’s resourceful and sharp and pays attention to things like the survivor he is. He gets by through hiding his hurt (except when he’s alone) and showing the world his recklessness and humour. He believes he can outrun his troubles and get what he wants. He is on the verge of danger sometimes but mostly he’s having a good time being a juvenile delinquent. MANITOBA-WIDE CALL, however would ideally like to see submissions from the members of Opaskwayak Cree Nation. Please note we are only accepting submissions from those 12-14 however this character will be playing younger (11-13)

Description
INDIGENOUS (Cree, open to other Indigenous backgrounds) -

Wilfred is from The Pas Manitoba and had his young years on the land and his youth in a tough Northern Manitoba town where he saw his family fall apart. He is a survivor, reckless but smart, a rolling stone who can’t stop. He’s always on the run from his demons and partying is how he escapes. It’s fun for a while, but then he takes the addiction train to the end of the tracks. Once he turns himself around, he must face his troubles. As he leans into the long road of healing, he finds that there is light on the other side of the darkness, as well as laughter and hope. | NATIONAL-WIDE OPEN CALL! | *This character may depict scenes that may be triggering to some including the use of alcohol.
