GARY
Gary Glickman, a man in his early forties, is driven by financial pressures and a deep need for validation. Despite his best efforts, he struggles to assert himself in competitive environments, often overshadowed by dominant figures like his manipulative boss, Don. During a high-stakes golf match meant to secure a crucial promotion, Gary’s insecurities make him vulnerable to Don’s mind games.
DON
Donald "Don" McLellan, a confident man in his sixties, is a master manipulator who uses his power and influence to control those around him. Despite his polished exterior and claims of being a devoted family man, Don always puts his own interests first, making him both captivating and ruthless.
Jayne Hill
A young woman born into the Hill family who was married to Matt Rogen as part of a family arrangement two years ago. At the beginning of the story, she learns she has terminal cancer with only six months to live, which completely changes her outlook on life. Having spent her entire life pleasing others—first her parents who favoured her brother and used her as a tool for business connections, then as a dutiful but unloved wife—she decides to live her remaining days on her own terms. After her diagnosis, Jayne transforms from a submissive, quiet wife into a confident, outspoken woman who stands up to the Rogen family's mistreatment and Matt's indifference. Her bravery, intelligence, and newfound spirit gradually win Matt's heart. Despite initially planning to divorce Matt to spare him from watching her die, she ultimately accepts a bone marrow transplant from him, which saves her life and cements their genuine love for each other.
Matt Rogen
The CEO of Rogen Group and founder of DE Jewelry, Matt is the illegitimate son of the Rogen patriarch. He returned to the Rogen family five years ago and quickly rose to prominence with his business acumen. Initially distant and cold toward Jayne, whom he believes was forced upon him as a spy by his stepmother Pam, Matt gradually warms to her changed personality and begins to develop genuine feelings for her. Carrying deep childhood trauma from witnessing his mother's death at age seven, he suffers from nightmares that only subside when he's with Jayne. When he discovers Jayne's terminal illness, he secretly donates bone marrow to save her life, risking his own health in the process. Matt evolves from a stoic businessman into a loving husband who finds in Jayne the family connection he's been missing since his mother's death.
Pam Rogen
Matt's vindictive stepmother who arranged his marriage to Jayne, hoping to place a spy in his household. Bitter about Matt's father having loved another woman (Matt's mother), Pam is determined to prevent Matt from taking control of the Rogen Group. She orchestrates much of the mistreatment Jayne experiences in the Rogen family compound, including forcing her to live in a stairwell when Matt was away on business. Her schemes ultimately backfire when Jayne stands up to her and exposes Greta's manipulations, leading to Pam losing her position and authority within the Rogen Group.
Reid Rogen
Matt's supportive cousin who initially shares the family's suspicion of Jayne but comes to respect and care for her as she changes and proves her loyalty to Matt. He serves as a confidant to both Matt and Jayne at different points, eventually revealing to Jayne that Matt was her bone marrow donor. Reid provides comic relief throughout the story while also being the voice of reason when Matt pushes himself too hard for Jayne's sake.
Greta Polley
Initially presented as Jayne's friend, Greta is revealed to be a manipulative social climber who only befriended Jayne to get closer to Matt. When Jayne discovers her true intentions through an overheard phone conversation, she deliberately injures Greta during an archery lesson, causing damage to her eye. Greta's public humiliation and subsequent emotional breakdown expose her true character to everyone, including her own family.
Keyla
An ambitious employee at Rogen Group who actively misrepresents herself as Matt's wife during a company event in Seattle. Arrogant and manipulative, she bullies Jayne without realizing who she actually is, going as far as physically shoving her and causing her to fall. Keyla orchestrates a workplace harassment campaign against Jayne by convincing other employees to file false complaints about nepotism. Her deception is dramatically exposed when Reid and Jayne reveal Jayne's true identity as Matt's legal wife in front of the accusers. Keyla justifies her actions by claiming Matt specifically recruited her for her design skills, which she interprets as proof of his special interest in her. Her delusions of replacing Jayne crumble when Matt coldly dismisses her, threatening legal action for her lies and stating he had never even met her before.
Jacob
JANICE
Janice is Valerie’s younger sister. With a dedication to her older sibling’s recovery and well-being second only to Will’s, she’s vivacious, flamboyant, and utterly unapologetic about who she is. Although holding strong opinions, her heart is as big as her personality. She is an empath, deeply intuitive, claiming to communicate with the dead. Her spiritual openness offers not just comic relief, but insight, and reflection. Functioning as a kind of third-eye presence, Janice becomes the audience’s guide through the story’s layered dual arcs: the visible, day-to-day life of Valerie, and the invisible, internal world she’s battling. Janice is warmth and color in a world often muted by pain—a reminder that even in the darkest spaces, there is still mystery, magic, and deep, undying love. She is a cock-eyed optimist, and believer in happy endings. Casting Note: Seeking a performer with strong emotional range and natural comedic timing. Think: messy healer, soulful oddball, deeply grounded despite the sparkle.
All supporting roles in this short film are budgeted as local hires in Montreal. Please submit accordingly.
FATHER
A wise jester and emotional anchor, Valerie’s father is playful, irreverent, and full of heart. A connection to past times when morals were strong and tradition was rooted, he provides Valerie with a vital connection to her younger self and a father’s wisdom, the rare kind a daughter trusts without hesitation. Though no longer fully part of the physical world, he lingers—part clown, part sage, and all soul. Where Janice connects Valerie to the world around her, he connects her to the world within—to the inner child she’s long buried beneath layers of pain and responsibility. He pokes fun at death, and reminds us that life is far too short to be taken too seriously —especially once it’s over. He adores his daughter deeply and, in his own mischievous way, wants her to understand a simple truth: life is hard—but in the end, we have to let go. His presence is both comforting and confronting, encouraging her to loosen her grip and rediscover joy. Casting Note: Seeking an actor with natural warmth, humor, and emotional depth. A trickster with soul—a clown, both mischievious and profoundly loving, sage, and all heart, conveying all even if it is at times, without words.
