Chinese Dad

Anja
Empathetic caretaker to her brother, Finn, torn between guilt and frustration. She evolves from silent suffering to defiance, claiming her right to exist as more than just her brother's protector, and instead as her own true self.
Finn
Trapped between his disorders (Tourette’s, ADHD, OCD) and his need to control them. Volatile outbursts, but deeply dependent on his sister, Anja, and shows sensitivity and gratitude by the end, demonstrating his love for her. Actor must respectfully and convincingly portray neurodivergence (tics, meltdowns), and requires a strong physical and emotional acting range.
Young Anja
Sensitive, observant, and innocent, but already carrying the quiet weight of living with a sibling’s illness. Reflects the early seeds of selflessness that grow into the older Anja before her defiance.
Veronika
The warm and nurturing, yet emotionally exhausted mother of Anja and Finn. She struggles balancing therapeutic rules, her love for both children, and her own invisible suffering. By the end, she accepts Finn’s need to return to a clinic and receive more treatment.
Sven
Playful, light-hearted father, but firm when discipline is needed. He struggles to keep normalcy at home, but ultimately validates and uplifts Anja, showing his pride and unconditional love for her.
Tim
Tim is a shy, isolated and melancholic 20 year old. He is distant from the people he calls friends and becomes hyper-fixated on the girl he falls in love with (Bella). He wants to know that Bella loves him back, but he also pulls himself away from this answer by his self-doubt and fear. This is what causes his transformation and haunting from the crows. Eventually, after seeing Bella dead, his transformation completes, he dies as well. Must be comfortable with prosthetic work.
Bella
Bella is the same way as Tim, isolated and in her own world. She spends lots of time in her basement room, barely leaving the house. When Bella saw Tim she also fell in love, but like Tim repressed it, causing her to transform. She stayed so long by herself afterwards from the beach meeting, waiting for his callback, but it never came, causing her to be consumed and die. Must be comfortable with prosthetic work.
The Crow
The Crow is a bird-like monster that is manifests itself from peoples repressed feelings and begins to leech off them. The Crow is almost omnipresent, wherever Tim and Bella are, it follows, and it curses them to turn into crows themselves and die, as if they continue to build up these feelings, the crow only becomes stronger. Must be comfortable with prosthetic work.
Aaron
Tim’s best friend. Aaron is loud, rambunctious, and outgoing. The opposite of Tim. He tries to convince Tim to muster up the courage to talk to Bella.
Ward
Ward has been living in Canada for over ten years, yet he continues to carry the weight of his past. His career has stalled, his relationship is unstable, and the lingering trauma of the war back home quietly shapes his every day. Outwardly composed and reserved, Ward’s calm demeanor masks a deep emotional complexity and a quiet struggle beneath the surface. This role requires the actor to speak Arabic (Syrian) This role includes a scene of intimacy (masturbation)
Naeem
Naeem is a Lebanese man who runs an Arabic bookstore in Montreal. He has lived in Canada for over thirty years, having left Lebanon after the war and never returned. Known for his sharp wit and direct manner, Naeem carries himself with the confidence of someone who has seen and endured much. This role requires the actor to speak Arabic (Lebanese)
Émilie
Émilie is Ward’s girlfriend. More grounded in her career than he is, she’s been with him for about five years. Although they’ve recently broken up, they continue to share the same living space. Warm and empathetic, Émilie is at a turning point in her life, trying to define her own path.
WAITRESS
Our waitress hasn't been at this specific restaurant terribly long, but has been in the service industry long enough to know the ropes. Is slightly put off by the dynamic between Nestor and Smiles, but can't put her finger on anything inherently wrong. Thinks maybe it's an overly eager, distant uncle reconnecting with an adult nephew.
Claire
After Claire discovers she’s pregnant, she feels unable to turn to her mom for help. Curious and searching for answers, she time-travels to the 1980s and turns to the teenage version of her mom for guidance. Independent and strong-willed, Claire longs for freedom and understanding. **This role will include smoking (Prop: cigarettes)**
Annabelle
Annabelle is bold, outspoken, and a little rebellious. When she finds out she’s pregnant, her tough exterior starts to crack, revealing a more vulnerable side as she confronts expectations from her religious family. **This role will include smoking (Prop: cigarettes)**
Annie
Annie is a caring but controlling single mother. Her overprotectiveness stems from fear that Claire will repeat her own past mistakes. She struggles to show vulnerability, often coming across as dismissive when she’s really just scared of losing control. **This role will include smoking (Prop: cigarettes)**
John
Annabelle’s strict and religious father. He is controlling and believes deeply in traditional values, often using guilt to enforce them.
Betty
Annabelle’s quiet and obedient mother. She avoids confrontation and listens passively, torn between her husband’s authority and her daughter’s pain.
