Voice Over (Radio) - UDA - Husband
HARPER
Harper is a woman neither young or old, strong from farm work, but well-worn from a life with more valleys than peaks. She’s also a devout Catholic, and the loss of her daughter has only strengthened her reliance on her faith instead of her reason. She’s not an easy person to be around — she can be dogmatic, uncompromising — but, like most difficult people, she’s disguising a lot of pain, and she relies on her husband’s ability to see the good in her.
ESTHER
Esther has experienced physical and emotional abuse at the hands of the people she should trust most — her father, her priest, and the nuns charged with her care at the Magdalene laundry for “fallen women” — but she’s become adept at burying the trauma. Similar to Harper, she’s had a difficult life that’s made a tough skin absolutely essential; and, like Harper, it takes a man Iike Finn to restore her faith in other people to do right by her.
FINN
Finn is a man aged beyond his years, due to the loss of his daughter, his battle with cancer, and the fortitude it takes to hide his diagnosis from his already bereft and grieving wife. A good and understated man, he always sees the good in others, and he always “laughs at the devil,” because what else can one do when life gets hard?
CIAN
Taken at face value, Cian is a handsome widower, grieving the loss of his wife while raising two daughters on his own. But, like the face of any evil corporation — shiny and persuasive, unusually polite, even kind — he’s disguising a corporate interest that’s silently killing the McGarrigles. This fact weighs on his conscience, though not enough for him to quit his job, or take action to protect them.
NARRATOR
An actor with a strong speaking voice to read the Minor roles as well as Stage Directions.
SHANNON BROWN
(Female, 27, Black). Pregnant with her first child, art curator Shannon wants her fiance Winston to release the family trauma weighing him down so he can be the best version of himself as he enters fatherhood. She admires the parts of Winston’s character that mirror the she loves best about her father, who shares a dark background similar to Winston's family. For their budding family, Shannon takes Winston to couples therapy. PRINCIPAL
WINSTON WILLIAMS
(Male, 30, Black/Afro-Caribbean). Winston struggles with the identity crisis that comes with escaping his family's criminal reputation for a life more suited for his future family. He convinces himself that confronting his abuser will fix a certain darkness within him and allow him to become the father and husband he is expected to be. Instead, Winston must also take accountability for the anger and lingering familial traits that plague him. LEAD
Reed
A timid young man who's soft spoken demeanor usually prevents him from challenging his friend's problematic beliefs. Reed is an enabler who draws security from being, in his mind, the best person in the room.
Dwight
A pretentious and lazy intellectual with a cynical ideology. Dwight serves as an antagonistic force to the other men in his life, goading them into giving up their pursuit of women.
Chris
A bit of a meathead, Chris fails to pick up on social cues and is always a little behind in conversations. Chris draws his sense of self from his ability to perform traditional masculinity, especially when it comes to flirting with women.
Sam
A young entrepreneur. Sam hides behind clout and vanity to conceal his insecurities. He sees women as symbols of status to buy and show off.
The Sister
The Sister is a collective hallucination, who mirrors the male characters' delusions/desires. Thus, her demeanor should vary from scene to scene. This role would likely entail some discussions, pre-production.
