Sam was raised by his single mother, who has been his source of happiness and guidance. She taught him strong values, teaching him never to take the wrong path, even for a good cause. Stuck between his principles and his love for his mother, his desperation to save her life pushes him toward choices that go against everything he believes in.

David is Sam’s Brother. David appears strong and confident, but this is a mask for his inner insecurity and lack of self-worth. He uses people to serve his own interests and has little empathy.

Susan is Sam and David’s mother. After her divorce, she raised Sam alone, facing many financial struggles without much support. Despite her hardships, she is a woman of strong principles. Sam is her main source of happiness and support, and her hopeful, positive outlook has been a guiding force in his life. We are looking for a younger actress to play Susan, as this script involves flashback scenes.... Aging makeup will be applied during scenes which take place in the present.

Olivia is a nurse, balancing her work with a cold yet empathetic manner. She’s middle class and, like Sam, struggles financially, working long hours just to make ends meet. She doesn’t have a passion for her job. It’s simply a means of survival. Although she may seem distant to Sam, she quietly shares similar struggles and sacrifices.

Sam (younger) Will appear in a montage sequence showing Sam's memories with his mother Susan. The two will be have scenes in both the living room and bedroom of their house.

MARIAM [35 - 45] [Ethnicity: Middle Eastern, North African] [Must speak Arabic] [Must be okay with intimate scenes and smoking] Mariam maintains a tight bond with her Orthodox Christian faith, maintaining its traditions and practices. She shares a vulnerability and love towards her son Bishoy. Despite being married to Joe, she feels distant towards him, believing that unspoken resentment is building between them. After Bishoy's diagnosis, she initially feels a sense of warmth when Joe embraces her faith. Her love with him initially blossoms as they bond through their diminished meals. However, when Joe soon takes a more radical approach towards fasting, she finds that her religion is being morphed into something unrecognizable. Mariam lives in a working class, rugged apartment complex. She faces economic hardship in her day-to-day life, and it's reflected in her appearance. For the sake of the story, it is essential that the performer has a thin frame - in order to add believability to the central premise. The director is looking for restrained, non-theatrical performances from actors. Based on the actor's ethnicity, the screenplay's Orthodox Christian faith will be amended to suit the performer's nationality.

JOE [35-45] [Must be okay with intimate scenes and smoking] Joe holds resentment towards Mariam for implementing religion into their child's life. He doesn't understand his wife's arbitrary, seemingly random traditions like fasting. However, he feels the weight of his disbelieving actions when his son is diagnosed with a brain tumour. He is desperate to repair the damage that he's done - especially in the eyes of God. He commits to a radical fast, morphing the initial intention of the practice into one that more closely reflects disordered eating habits. When his wife shows affection towards his religious embrace, he cannot help but 'double down' on his diminished meals. Soon, he finds himself becoming more militant in belief than his wife. Joe lives in a working class, rugged apartment complex. He faces economic hardship in her day-to-day life, and it's reflected in his appearance. Emigró a Madrid, España, en donde trabaja como niñera, es la única amiga que tiene Lucila, una mexicana que también es niñera y migrante igual a ella. Las dos tienen una gran relación, Carlota es una chica muy desinhibida, libre, valiente, aguerrida, aventurera, afectuosa, soñadora y enamoradiza.

Brandon Bumcowski AKA Lil’ Bumpkin. Clout hungry rapper wannabe teen. Has skewed perception of instant gratification through fame and its value rooted from his social media addiction. He is more interested in being famous and rich than possessing skill and artistic voice. Brandon is overly confident, slightly grumpy, and underestimates the work that goes into attaining success, despite all of this, he is still a good kid at heart.

A nurturing, and supportive mother, always trying to give her son Brandon the life she always wanted growing up. She is surprised when Brandon reveals that he is dropping out to become an independent musician (rapper), given his previous lack of interest. She understands the importance of learning through experience and entertains Brandon’s dreams, but still expects him to show her that he has what it takes to pursue them.

Pragmatic tech savvy, lonely, teen who acts as Brandon's self-proclaimed "manager". Ethan recognizes the reality of the rap scene, but like Brandon he values superficial aspects over actual talent. He is optimistic, opportunistic, and jumps at the chance to help Brandon achieve his goals, and gain a friend in the process.

Charismatic host and DJ of the Annual Oakville Freestyle Throwdown Competition. He’s a confident, quick thinking, and cool showman who is a pillar in the local hip hop scene. He understands the intensity and pressure of the rap battle environment and maintains control of the event, enforcing the rules and starting the music for each rapper's turn.

TikTok famous rapper and reigning champion of the Annual Oakville Freestyle Throwdown Competition. He is a master of his craft and possesses an intimidating slim shady like presence. His established reputation, large following, talent, and confident demeanor represent the challenges Brandon faces in breaking into the competitive world of rap.

Disgruntled, jaded school office lady. She has been working at the school for years and counts down the days til’ she can retire. She’s been around at the school so long that she’s seen everything and she isn’t easily rattled.

(Black / Biracial) Greta has tired eyes and bites her nails until theres nothing left to bite. She is pretty in a strange, sombre way. Greta is hypervigilant and she’s very good at faking a smile. She is not, however, very good at getting close to people. She believes god is always watching over her - so she tries not to look at women for too long… (Alternative, Gay, Transfeminine, Nonbinary, or GNC applicants are encouraged to apply!) She is tired of her spacious apartment and her scripted-feeling conversations with her art school friends. She has reached a point where she stares at her manicured, ring-cluttered hands and wonders why she doesn’t recognize them any more. Maybe Montreal is starting to feel too small for her - or maybe she should just quit smoking again. Hopefully Alice will feel like herself again when she finally gets that next tattoo.
