The dead of winter, perfect skiing weather. 14-year-old Aiden confidently navigates the slopes, helping his best friend Lucas up from a fall. The pair head back to Aiden’s family cabin, where they’re greeted warmly by his mother Jill. Throughout an evening of banter, teasing, and wrestling, the boy’s closeness is evident. That night, Aiden shuffles down into Lucas’s half of the trundle bed, and ever so slowly, navigates into a cuddle. Morning arrives, and the energy has shifted. Aiden has gone cold, unwilling to acknowledge what just happened. Jill quietly checks in at breakfast, but he doesn’t open up. Back on the mountain, Lucas lags behind and falls. He cries out for Aiden, who ditches him. At the bottom of the hill, amidst a slew of other skiers and boarders, Aiden waits, and waits, and waits in vain for Lucas to catch up.
