Lilly is on a search for answers. She makes do in 1919 Winnipeg as a nurse, a mother, and a wife, but there’s something missing. Something she’s yearning for. In the aftermath of the Spanish Flu, she embarks on a journey to discover all that she can about how to communicate with the dead. Hugh, her husband and a renowned doctor, is dismissive of her new hobby, preferring to explain the unexplained through science and rationale. Strong-willed, Lilly doesn’t let her husband’s comments bother her. She sets up a space in their parlour room, and there, she tries everything from using spirit boards to table tipping. But nothing seems to work. That is, until she convinces her daughter Clara’s nanny Elizabeth, to assist her. Elizabeth is not so keen on this new venture, but feels like she must do whatever the Martins ask of her, so she joins in on a spirit board session. It’s then that the planchette moves, much to Lilly’s dismay and delight. Lilly knows then and there that Elizabeth is a gifted medium, and from now on, they’re going to work together to communicate with the dead.
