Comments
PÉTROLE is a feature film to be shot in Québec and Alberta this summer. The film is in French, however because it takes place in Northern Alberta, some characters have lines only in English; we will be casting these Anglophone roles ONLY.

We are committed to diverse, inclusive casting for every role. Please submit qualified performers without regard to disability, race, age, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, ethnic origin, or any other basis prohibited by law unless otherwise specifically indicated.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS FILM HAS A LOW BUDGET.

IMPORTANT NOTE TO ACTORS:The original version of the script is written in French and English. The audition sides are excerpted from an "all English version" that was NOT done by a professional translator. Please feel free to make any minor adjustments to the language to accommodate what flows best for you, as the character and/or the reader.

Details concerning QUEBEC STATUS requirement:

RESIDENCE - for the roles on this breakdown (WITH THE EXCEPTION OF DAVE), please ONLY submit performers that qualify as Quebec status. We are NOT currently able to consider Performers that do not qualify as Quebec status.

TAXES - MUST have paid income taxes within Quebec (for no less than 2022 & 2023)! Performers will be contracted as individuals OR through a Quebec (incorporated) loan-out company.

SPECIAL NOTE REQUEST - TO AGENTS: Please confirm that you have seen the above notes by listing where your suggested performers file their taxes (and whether personal or business) in the NOTES field of each Performer, or on your submission lists.

MESSAGE CONCERNING PERFORMERS OUTSIDE OF QUEBEC (aka NOT QUEBEC STATUS) - One of the roles in this breakdown will be released in other cities; however, please note that Production has to meet requirements to fulfill the Quebec tax credit, as well as having limited resources in terms of bringing performers from outside of Quebec; PRIORITY will be to cast as locally as possible.

Storyline
Mathieu (26 years old) arrives in Fort McMurray (Alberta) with his tools and the desire to make some money – the down payment to buy a house with Jessica, his girlfriend who stayed in Quebec. There, he is met by Craig, an exiled Quebec entrepreneur who puts him up at a high price with Steve and Dave, two other of his guys. Putting in many long and hard days laying foundations, Mathieu gravitates closer and closer to the manna of the tar sands. A skillful worker, he becomes Craig's right-hand man, who promises him the possibility of being his partner. But just as money finally seems within reach, Mathieu is injured on a construction site and is forced to return to Quebec to convalesce. The reunion with Jessica is cut short. Worn out, obsessed with the West and its promises, Mathieu leaves Quebec again, but Craig evades him and his colleagues have dispersed. In debt, without work or housing, everything changes for this man who thought he was free, and he watches his dream of success collapse.

Solitary and taciturn, he has no known attachments, apart from a mysterious girlfriend whose photo he shows Mathieu, confiding that he hopes one day to make a life with her. Dave works tirelessly to establish himself with the woman he loves. Enduring Craig's racist attacks, Dave is nevertheless one of the few to stand up to him, in a confrontation where the boss seems to both despise and fear him. But with Craig's rapid advancement and preferential treatment of Mathieu, Dave can't help but be deeply hurt. While he erects a barrier between himself and his white colleagues, he proves himself to be a hard worker who will do anything to achieve his goal.
