Please only submit clients who are Montreal locals or willing to work as Montreal locals. This is an indie film funded by Canada Council, and we don't have the budget to bring in performers outside of Montreal.

Storyline

Convalescence is a dystopian thriller that follows Mara, a young queer woman struggling with addiction, as she is forced into a rehab centre that employs an unconventional treatment method that strips her of autonomy. The film raises questions about what type of support and freedom mentally ill people need in order to heal and if we currently receive it from the systems we have in place. Convalescence is funded by Canada Council.

Supporting	Hannah	Female 19 - 26 Years old
Description Can play female. Open ethnicity. Standard American accent. We encourage submissions of actors who identify as LGBTQ+. Impulsive, sensitive, goofy, queer. Hannah comes from a loving household who shunned her due to her addiction and diagnosis of Bipolar. She’s determined to live life on her own terms and has absolutely no regard for authority. Always loud in public even when it might be socially inappropriate, Hannah doesn’t feel embarrassed when she receives judgement in return. She’d get in a fist fight to protect a friend, and she’d leave victoriously with a smile on her face. In a society that has always told her to be someone she’s not, Hannah counters her shame with witty sarcasm and unapologetic openness. She dreams of marrying a loving wife and moving somewhere deep in nature where she can make pottery and live in a disarray of their own making. PLEASE NOTE: potential of implied nudity, viewed topless from the back during a love scene. Open to discussion depending on comfort of performer. There will be an intimacy coordinator. Description Can play male. Open ethnicity. Standard American accent. In control, proper with a welcoming exterior (think James McAvoy in X-Men), Dr Griffin believes strongly that everyone should earn their keep. Don’t let his charm and kindness fool you - he will do anything to get what he wants. Dr Griffin hasn’t had a good sleep in years, being too driven by his projects, and therefore has a short temper if anything doesn’t go his way. RATE: 200$/8 hour day

Description Can play male. Open ethnicity. Standard American accent. Unkempt, abrasive, and socially awkward, Leonard terrifies Mara when she first meets him. Alienated from his kids and wife due to his addiction, Leonard is unhinged and jaded. He helps Mara understand what the institution is, only out of his fondness of Hannah. He knows right from wrong, but is too tired to fight anymore. RATE: 200$/8 hour day

Description Any gender. Open ethnicity. This patient has a mental breakdown in the cafeteria, slamming their head into the cafeteria table. They are screaming as the orderly escorts them out. This is assumed to be just a side effect from withdrawal. They are later seen by Mara lying in the recovery room unconscious. Looking for actors comfortable with stunts/physicality. RATE: 150$/8 hour day

Description Any gender. Open ethnicity. Perfectly coiffed and robotic. Orderly #1 is serving food in the institutions cafeteria with a big smile that creeps Mara out. Mara has an uncomfortable exchange with them. They later escort Screaming Patient out of the cafeteria. RATE: 150$/8 hour day

Description All genders. Open ethnicity. Patients of various genders, ages, and ethnicities to represent our addicts in recovery at the institution.
