Storyline
The Dyslexia Canada PSA begins with the character of John/Jessica, a high schooler with Dyslexia. They're attempting to finish an exam at school but are struggling as other students exit the room before them. While caring about them, their teacher, Mrs. Rooth, struggles to understand the problem. At a teacher's student review, Mrs. Rooth brings these problems to the attention of other faculty as they judge John's poor performance. The story concludes when a student guidance teacher, Mr.Carter, notices the signs of Dyslexia and points them out, allowing the student to get the proper channels of help they need.
Roles
Role typeRoleGender & Age range
LeadJohn/JessicaAll 15 - 24 Years old
Description
John/Jess is a high schooler of any ethnicity struggling with undiagnosed dyslexia because none of the teachers in their life have been trained to recognize it. They are a hardworking student who desires a strong future in schooling, but because no one has caught their dyslexia, his/her grades begin to tank. This causes him/her to be stressed, which makes dyslexia worse. For John/Jess, capturing a youthful look and someone who can sell the stress of the situation through their actions is important. John’s/Jess’ role is non-speaking, but they are one of the leads of this PSA and are the emotional core of the story.
Role typeRoleGender & Age range
LeadMr./Ms. RoothAll 30 - 55 Years old
Description
Rooth is a teacher of any ethnicity who is very passionate about all her children's educations and recently has become concerned about one student in particular. Rooth is an advocate for this student and genuinely wants to help them, but Rooth is unsure of why they are struggling and Rooth's peers are against him/her. For Ms./Mr. Rooth, the actor, must be able to express sadness for John's/Jess' performance and curiosity about why a clearly intelligent kid is failing. Rooth has the most lines in the PSA and is one of the lead roles.
Role typeRoleGender & Age range
LeadCarterAll 28 - 45 Years old
Description
Carter is a person of any ethnicity fresh out of teachers' college who doesn't like to do things how they were done before simply because it's tradition. Her/His sister was diagnosed with Dyslexia at a young age, and they only were able to diagnose her because they were looking for ADHD. Although Carter has minimal screen time, they need to be able to command authority in a room filled with people older than them, with nothing but a few words and the strong integrity of their on-screen presence. His/her charisma and ability to deliver the final line are immensely important for the story and the message of the PSA to work.
